Uber came at a time when transportation in Bangladesh was at its worst. Public transportations sucked, taxis were crudely expensive, and CNG-run three-wheeler walas acted like the Godfather of the streets by refusing to take a fare when they feel like it or by hoping that you’d make them an offer they couldn’t refuse.
That means offering to pay at least 3 times the regular fare, by the way. Even then, they’d say no just to show who’s boss.
Nothing has changed since Uber launched in Dhaka. Public transportation is still a nightmare. Taxis are out of reach for most. CNG walas tried to shut down the likes of Uber and failed, but they still haven’t learned their lesson to take fares at a fair rate.
The one thing that has changed is how you can request a ride using apps like Uber and Pathao and reach your destination much more conveniently.
There are tons of Uber-like app-based ride-hailing services out there. But in today’s post, we’ll take a look at the types of Uber rides that you can request on your app.
If you have been using Uber regularly, you are already familiar with these. But if you still haven’t tried Uber yet, here’s all you need to know about the types of rides that you can request using the Uber app in Dhaka.
Uber MOTO is simply a motorcycle ride. Motorcycles are the fastest way to travel anywhere in Dhaka although they are not necessarily the safes. If you’re really in a hurry and you don’t mind inhaling the extra dust and basking in the summer heat while you’re on your way, you can request for an Uber MOTO ride.
It will save you time and money, but it may not save your appearance once you’ve reached your destination.
uberX is the budget Uber ride. Dhaka is full of cars from the twentieth century and this category of Uber rides is the most likely to bring you cars from the last century. You can still get some early 2000 Toyota Corolla and other cars, but if you want to ensure a comfortable ride, you’d want to spend some more and get the next level.
For reaching your destination in a car in the most budget-friendly way, uberX is the ride to choose.
The highest ride type on Uber in Dhaka is called PREMIER. This level confirms that your ride will be the most elegant, comfortable, and premium. However, don’t expect the latest Lancer EX or Toyota Camry. 8 out of 10 times, you’ll get a Toyota Axio. And the other two times you’ll get an Allion or Premio.
These cars, at least in my experience, have the most satisfactory ride quality for obvious reasons. The downside, other than the obvious extra cost, is that cars under this category aren’t always available. Especially during the office hours, you’ll be lucky if you find one because they’re all usually in use either on Uber or by the owners.
Uber HIRE is the latest type that they’ve launched in Dhaka. I’ve used it once in Kochi, Kerala, India, and the idea is no different from a hired/rental car that comes with a driver.
With Uber HIRE, you have two options to choose from — 2 hours and 4 hours. If you choose 4 hours, for example, you will get to keep the Uber ride for 4 hours. That means if you have multiple pit stops to make, you can do so.
So, if you want to take a trip to a shopping mall, and then to a restaurant, and then back home, all within either 2 or 4 hours, this is the ride you can get.
The types of Uber rides available vary from one location to the next. In the US and India, you can request for an SUV on Uber. The fleet in Dhaka isn’t that big yet, and I doubt any proper SUV owner here would put their car on Uber. Still, Uber has launched quite a few types of rides since its inception with the basic uberX.
Now that you know what type of ride gets you what type of car, you can safely request the type of ride that meets your budget and comfort needs.
