Reissuing passport is a pain especially in a country like Bangladesh where citizens are made to jump through many hoops to achieve simple tasks. For some weird reason, the passports in Bangladesh still carry a validity of only 5 years. Even the nearest country, India, has a passport validity of 10 years.
There have been discussions about increasing the validity to 10 years, but as of now, the validity is 5 years. So if your passport was issued close to 5 years ago, you were in for reissuing your passport.
Around the months of April and May 2018, the passport issuing authority ran out of books to print passports on.
As I found out earlier this year, reissuing passport in Dhaka was not that much of a chore as I thought it would be. You can see my step-by-step instructions on how to reissue passport in Dhaka. I’ve explained in details what the process was like for me. Surprisingly, it was pretty straightforward.
Little did I know that I was lucky to have reissued my visa 6 months before the expiry date.
Why? Because those who have applied to reissue their passport around May or after have had to wait a ridiculously long period of time to get their passport back.
Allow me to explain
How long it’s supposed to take to reissue passport
Let’s forget what the authorities say about the time it takes to reissue the passport. From this post, we’ve seen this:
- Regular (takes somewhere between 4 to 5 weeks) – Tk. 3,450.
- Express (takes somewhere between 2 to 3 weeks) – Tk. 6,900.
It’s supposed to take much shorter, but it doesn’t. Realistically, the time it takes for regular passport delivery is about a month. For Express passport delivery, it’s about two weeks. If you’re lucky, it’ll take much shorter like it did for me. But most people aren’t lucky. After all, we live in Bangladesh.
Around the months of April and May 2018, the passport issuing authority ran out of books to print passports on. As shocking and ridiculous as that is, that is the explanations I’ve found in different media. As a result, those who applied for reissuing their passport fell victim to an unusually long period of time before their passport is printed and ready for delivery.
I was lucky to have reissued my passport earlier in the year. If you applied to reissue your passport around April, May, or June 2018, and it is taking much longer than expected time according to the delivery type that you have chosen (Regular or Express), you’re not alone.
Several Facebook groups are flooded with victims of this. People paid extra to have their passport reissued on an urgent basis, but they did not get their passport within the expected time frame. I’ve seen countless posts on Facebook regarding this, and unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done in this case. The only thing you can do is wait and hope that the passport will be ready for delivery before your planned travel dates.
So, if your passport is taking too long to be issued, now you know why. I don’t know how a country can run out of books to print passports on — given how important this thing is for every citizen who is in need of it — but then again, we must not forget that we live in Bangladesh. Stuff like this is the norm in this part of the world.
