What to watch this week in Theaters

Unlike the people in London, we love it when it drizzles in Dhaka. The keyword here is drizzle because anything heavier and half our city roads go underwater. 🤦‍♂️

The good thing is, it’s the weekend and you don’t necessarily have to go outside. However, it’s the perfect time to go outside with your friends and family as the weather is so comfortable and breezy.

If movies are your thing, then here’s a list of what’s playing in two of the best theaters in the city, Star Cineplex and Blockbuster Movies at Jamuna Future Park.

Star Cineplex – Bashundhara City

It Chapter Two

If you loved Netflix hit Stranger Things, you will definitely like Stephen King’s “It.” If you did not watch the first one, you can find “it” on Netflix (get “it?”) before you head over to watch the sequel.

“It Chapter Two,” in my opinion, is one of the weirdest movies I’ve ever watched. Horror movies take us to weird places. That’s by nature. But this almost-three-hour-long movie just makes you go “What the heck is happening” multiple times throughout.

That is not to say it’s a bad movie. It’s a very good watch. But, as you will see different characters saying it in the movie, “I didn’t like the ending.”

Maleficent – Mistress of Evil

If you liked Maleficent for some reason, you will like the sequel. That’s pretty much all I have to say about this.

Shap Ludu

I haven’t actually watched this movie so it’s hard to say anything about it. But if the ratings are any indication, you may enjoy this movie if you’re into some action and mystery thriller.

Do I even need to say anything about this masterpiece of a movie that’s been storming everyone’s newsfeed on Facebook lately?

I will tell you one thing, it’s not everyone’s movie. But if you know who Joker is and have been a fan of this character, then you’ll surely love the movie. It’s already on its way to becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing Deadpool.

Zombieland: Double Tap

What is the second rule of surviving a zombie apocalypse?

If you loved the action-comedy movie Zombieland, there’s a good chance you’ll like this one too.

Gemini Man

Will Smith is back on screen after his amazing performance as the Genie in Aladdin. But this time, he’s playing his own younger version.

Director Ang Lee, famous for his incredible work in Life of Pi, shot this movie with the best technology available. Unfortunately, most theaters, even the majority in the United States, are not yet capable of screening the movie the way it was meant to be seen.

That’s probably why you might be better off watching the movie when it hits streaming services. But if you’re an action movie fan and you love Will Smith (who doesn’t!), the movie is still playing twice every day this week.

Other Star Cineplex Locations

The second home of Star Cineplex at Shimanto Shambhar is showing only three movies this week: Joker, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and Zombieland: Double Tap.

Meanwhile, at the recently opened Star Cineplex location at SKS Tower in Mohakhali is showing Joker, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Zombieland: Double Tap, and Shap Ludu.

While you may have loved the pictures of the new cineplex at SKS Tower shared on Facebook, beware of the exorbitant ticket price they are charging at SKS Tower if you want to enjoy those comfy seats.

Blockbuster Cinemas

Blockbuster Cinemas almost always have a higher number of movies than Star Cineplex. Personally, I’m not a big fan of the quality of the screen at Blockbuster Cinemas located at Jamuna Future Park, but there are some movies that you can watch only there if you want a theater experience.

In addition to Joker, Gemini Man, Shap Ludu, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Blockbuster Cinemas at Jamuna Future Park is also showing the following:

Dora and the Lost City of Gold

Is this a movie for kids or teenagers? If the reviews are any indication, it turns out, if you love adventure, this might be your cup of tea.

Once you’ve finished watching the Zombieland sequel, if you’re still into zombies, you can head over to JFP and give this yet another Zombie film a try. Is this any good? I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Fast & Furious Presents – Hobbs and Shaw

If you’re into action films and you want to watch only one in the theater, let it be this one. As a long time fan of the Fast and the Furious franchise who has been growing tired of the aimless action in the recent parts, I absolutely loved the mix of action and comedy in this film.

It may not be the best action movie 2019 has seen, but it’s certainly not the worst.

So, which of the movies listed above are you interested in watching? If you’ve already watched one of them, do let us know in the comments if it was worth the price of admission!
