Netflix just launched in Bangladesh. It’s the current hot topic among movie and TV show fans who want to watch movies legally without downloading it. Just how much should you expect from Netflix? Let this post be your introduction to the world of Netflix.
Without going into the boring details of what Netflix is and when it was founded, let’s just jump into the questions that you may or may not know the answers to.
Can I watch latest movies and TV show episodes on Netflix?
Chances are, you can’t. It takes a while for the recently aired TV shows or recently released movies to drop on Netflix. Usually, when a movie is released into the theater, after a short while, it’s released into other streaming services like iTunes and Google Play Movies. Users can rent those individual movies for a fee somewhere around $5-$15 and watch them.
Netflix doesn’t work the same way. You pay a flat fee of $9.99 per month, and you get to access everything that’s in its collection. Production houses can’t make enough profit if they release the movie on services like Netflix. As a result, it takes a while before Netflix gets rights to a TV show or movie.
Is Netflix better than torrents? Are my torrent-downloading days over?
Not really. While downloading via torrent is still illegal, it’s your best chance at getting your hands on the latest TV shows and movies. Netflix isn’t here to replace that, at least, not anytime soon.
What Netflix is good for is to let you leisurely browse through its rather large selection of TV shows, movies, and documentaries and watch whatever piques your interest without having to wait many hours till the download finishes. For me, and many other Netflix users around the world, that is the best part of having a Netflix subscription. You can just fire up the app and start watching whatever you like. No download necessary.
Although Netflix doesn’t offer you the latest content (Like you can’t find The Abominable Bride just yet, but previous Sherlock episodes are available), there are still tons of great TV shows and movies on Netflix. Some of them you’ve never heard of but are pretty good. More on that below.
Is my internet speed good enough?
Good question. Internet speed is an important part in watching Netflix, as whatever you watch will have to be constantly streamed. That’s just a fancy term to say that you’re downloading something as you watch. So, let’s just get it out of the way that you shouldn’t attempt to watch Netflix if you’re on a limited (3G or whatever) data connection. Your internet pack will be over before you know it.
Also, Netflix is more like YouTube — if not a tad faster — in determining your connection speed and streaming content accordingly. I don’t know what goes on under the hood, but sometimes, very rarely, when the connection is too bad, Netflix drops down to 480p resolution. And trust me, it was still watchable on my 40” 1080p TV.
If you have a connection of 1.5 mbps or above, you should be good to watch Netflix. Just make sure that you have unlimited internet data.
Can I watch everything on Netflix?
Yes, and no. It depends on what you mean by ‘everything.’ First of all, ‘everything’ is not on Netflix as already described above. Second of all, ‘everything’ that’s on Netflix can’t be accessed from a single location. It’s called regional collection. Allow me to explain.
If you go to Google Play and search for Spotify, chances are, you won’t find it if you’re physically in Bangladesh. Why? Because Google Play Bangladesh region does not support Spotify. You need a trick to access Google Play US region and then you’ll have access to apps like Spotify or Netflix.
There’s such a thing called regions. It means you can’t access all titles from all locations even if Netflix itself is officially available.
Netflix is pretty much the same. Not every title — and when I say title, I refer to either TV shows or movies — can be accessed from every regions. Netflix has tons of regions. Something that’s available on Netflix US is not available in Netflix UK. And that’s why there’s a high chance that accessing Netflix from Bangladesh won’t let you watch a lot of the titles.
For example, “Better Call Saul” is a surprisingly addictive spin-off of the popular TV show, Breaking Bad. “Better Call Saul” is available on Netflix UK region. If you access Netflix US, you won’t be able to watch it.
With that in mind, the answer is no. You cannot watch everything on Netflix. You’ll have to use a service like VPN or smart DNS — as described in this rather lengthy article published before the Netflix’s official arrival — to switch what region of Netflix you’re seeing.
So, in the end, although Netflix can be accessed from Bangladesh directly, you’ll need a smart DNS to access the true collection of Netflix. (I don’t recommend a VPN service because VPN will slow down your internet speed, even the premium ones do.)
Remember that the answer to the previous question was also yes? That’s for the really old (some of which are great, though) titles. And the Netflix Originals.
Netflix Originals are some really great titles that are made and owned by Netflix. Because Netflix owns all the rights to those titles, they can make it accessible to all countries where Netflix is available. You must have heard of House of Cards, haven’t you? House of Cards is a Netflix Original series. You can see some of the Netflix Original titles in the screenshots below.
How do I pay for Netflix?
You need an internationally accepted debit or credit card to be able to pay for Netflix. If you can’t get one from your bank — contact your bank for the requirements or wait a few weeks for me to post about it 😉 — you can get a Payoneer MasterCard and use that on Netflix. If you’re a freelancer in popular marketplaces, chances are, you already have a Payoneer MasterCard.
Get a Payoneer MasterCard (debit card) to pay for Netflix and other int’l services.
Once you’ve signed up for Netflix, you get one month of free Netflix. You can determine whether or not Netflix is worth $10 per month during this month. If you do think it’s worth it, you can continue to pay using the Payoneer card or you can buy Netflix gift cards and redeem them on your account.
Netflix gift cards are not available in Bangladesh yet. Gadgets and Gear announced on Facebook that they will be bringing it soon sell those at a ridiculous price of $1 = Tk. 100. But if you can’t get a friend to bring a bunch of Netflix cards from the US, then G&G is your best bet.
Can I resume an episode on Netflix?
It’s one of the other things that’s awesome about Netflix. You can start watching 10 different movies or TV shows on Netflix, and Netflix will keep track of where you are on each movie or episode. You can continue watching Netflix on another device and resume right where you left off.
It’s a blessing not having to keep a mental note of which episode I’m on when I’m watching a number of TV shows at the same time — such as Burn Notice, Flashpoint, Criminal Minds, The Twilight Zone, Bob’s Burgers, and a lot more! I can just tune into Netflix and start watching the next episode.
How will Netflix know what will pique my interest?
When you first sign up for Netflix, you’ll be asked to pick from a large selection of titles that you’ve watched and enjoyed. I’ve found that the Netflix’s recommendation system is pretty great. It recommended me a number of TV shows and movies that I’ve enjoyed later on.
Besides, Netflix’s rating system is very accurate. I’ve noticed that anything above 4 stars is worth watching. I’m yet to find something that’s bad despite having a high rating on Netflix. So, you can use those stars to your advantage and decide what to watch and what to skip.
As a bonus tip, you can create multiple profiles on Netflix. You can create those profiles based on different interests — such as one for sci-fi, horror, action, and other heavy stuff, and the other for comedy, drama, documentary. Also, there’s a Kids profile by default that has tons of kid-friendly content.
I can’t find Netflix app on Google Play store
You should be able to find it soon. But in the meantime, you can grab the official Netflix app from this link. Download it, transfer it to your Android and install the app.
Can I Netflix and chill?
Depends on if you have a girlfriend and if your bashay jane. 😉
But, if you’re tired of seeing this everywhere without a clue as to what this means, educate yourself here.
I’m not a Netflix expert, but I’ve been a Netflix subscriber for a few months now and I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoy the benefits of it. I don’t have to download stuff when I want to watch something. Netflix has got a pretty great collection to keep me busy for months. And while I’m busy finishing those series, Netflix continues to add new content and new Netflix Originals.
I’d love to answer any question that I know the answer to. So, ask away!
